Introducing :: Plume Boudoir

Business

Early this year the requests started to come in. A Bride or two would ask us if we ever shoot boudoir photography, or if we were willing to shoot boudoir photography. They were “just wondering” but if we ever did want to do a boudoir session… they’d be interested. Then more and more Brides started asking us this question, until eventually a few of our Brides teamed up and approached us with the idea of doing a boudoir marathon weekend.  This idea sounded like a good plan and we’ve seen this sort of marathon boudoir weekend done quite a bit so we were excited! However, with a busy wedding schedule of our own and our Bride’s conflicting calendars… the marathon weekend just couldn’t work. The idea was dropped but we never let it leave the back of our minds… “boudoir photography… hmmmmm”.

Then it happened. A few months later when we decided to take a look at the empty office space we now call our studio, we walked into the 3 room office suite and bam! There it was! Our boudoir studio. To the left of our meeting room is a doorway that opens into a light filled, airy room perfect for indoor portraits. We weren’t looking for such a large office space at first, but when we saw the potential of this larger than necessary studio, the wheels started turning and within a few days Plume Boudoir was born. We started right away, dressing the walls with drapes and creating our very own little boudoir photography studio.

When developing Plume there were two essential things we knew we wanted to stay firm on in the planning process. 1. We did not want to confuse our Birds of a Feather brand into becoming something it’s not, and 2. We only wanted to do refined, timeless and tasteful boudoir photography.

Birds of a Feather Photography has become our lives. We eat, drink and sleep this company day in and day out. The focus of our work is not changing. We are first and foremost wedding photographers. But we realized along with this experience we provide our couples, comes the opportunity to serve our Brides on a different level. The closeness we share with our Brides and the connections we build have led these women to come to us looking for a way to surprise their husbands or wives to be. These boudoir photos will become a part of their bigger Love Story… and we see the photos we create as love letters. In fact, that’s exactly how we built the Plume brand… on the idea that boudoir photography can be a smaller part of a couple’s Love Story, and the photos a Bride gives to her partner can be a love letter in and of themselves.

Tasteful boudoir photography can be a delicate balance to achieve. Playboy style photo sessions are not something we offer. Our style of boudoir photography is rooted in the pinup inspired portraits of the early 20th century. Our belief is boudoir photography should leave much to the imagination, and to be sexy one doesn’t have to show much skin… or any skin at all. So we spent a lot of time researching our favorite boudoir photographers, studying boudoir portraits and pinup art from the 1940’s and 1950’s, and defined our style incorporating our own methods.

All of Plume’s sessions will be done inside our permanent studio located in La Plata, MD. Sessions are available for our current Brides of course, but also for women at any stage in their Love Story who want to send a different kind of Love Letter. All sessions include professional hair and makeup stylings, done in the studio just prior to the session itself. Sessions are done in a comfortable and private space designed for nothing other than this type of photography. It is truly a blessing to have such a perfect space for these photos.

So without anymore stalling, we’re happy to share with the world our new addition to the Birds of a Feather business… Plume Boudoir!

A handful of our past Brides have been in and out of the Plume studio in the last few weeks, secretly having their boudoir photos taken. We’ve been working with Signature Salon and Spa to get some amazing hair and makeup done in the studio, and we must especially thank the owner of the spa, Jenna, for coming out to make all of our lovely ladies photo ready. Sessions have been completed, photos have been edited and sent out, albums have been designed and ordered, and the first batch is on it’s way to our studio. Soon they’ll be given as gifts to some very lucky men out there! These boudoir photo albums, are being used as anniversary gifts, wedding gifts, Christmas gifts and “just because” gifts. How delightful!

Two of our Brides, and very brave souls might we add, have given us the permission to use some photos from their boudoir sessions on our website. We can’t thank Ashley and Kayla enough for being so darn gorgeous, and for their willingness to share these photos publicly. On that note: Plume Boudoir will not be blogging the majority of it’s sessions. Naturally, most of our Plume ladies have requested for their photos to remain private and we’re more than happy to do so. (All the more reason we owe Ashley and Kayla big time!)

Let’s take a look at some of our favorites from Ashley and Kayla’s sessions…
