Tips and Tricks

Our couples come to us for advice all the time. Most of the time our expertise can help them in regard to their timeline or small wedding day details. How to organize the day, when to do a first look, where to go for the best light, how to hold a bouquet, when to do the toasts, how to cut the cake… these are all things we can help with. We have tips and tricks galore, but when it comes to bridal beauty we like to leave it up to the experts. So after years of our Brides coming to us with wedding day beauty questions, we took it upon ourselves to reach out to someone who knows what she’s talking about. In this Bridal Beauty installment of our Tips and Tricks series, we’ll share an insider’s perspective on wedding day makeup, and how Brides can achieve the look they’re hoping for.

The founder of the I Do Wedding Connection, Monique Melton, is a dear friend of ours and also happens to be a professional makeup artist. She’s spent years in the field, and is full of knowledge. Her work is beautiful and we have always loved photographing models and Brides who have been made up by Monique. When we asked Monique to help our readers and Brides better understand the world of wedding day beauty, she was excited to help. So let’s start with our first installment, and hear what Monique has to say to Brides considering professional makeup artistry for their wedding day look.

She gives us 3 reccomendations on the process of deciding if a professional makeup artist is right for you:

1. When deciding on a makeup artist, don’t let the price be your deciding factor. Often times you get what you pay for when it comes to this industry. Brides have to remember that when they are paying an artist to apply makeup on them for their wedding that they are paying for much more than the makeup itself. Instead, they are paying for the artist’ talent, experience, knowledge, creativity, and time. Trusting your wedding day look to an inexperienced makeup artist is not usually worth the savings.

2. Ask the artist what products they use. Brides may or may not be sensitive to certain brands. If you are particularly sensitive to certain brands, you’ll want to know if your makeup artist is going to show up on your wedding day with only the products you respond negatively to. Or, if you are in love with a specific brand of products, make sure you find an artist who can cater to your needs

3. Book a trial run and give your HONEST feedback about what you think of the completed makeover. Remember, the trial run is the time to get the look exactly how you want it, so experimenting and trying out different colors is the perfect thing to do at the trial run. Don’t leave until you’re happy with the result, or until you realize that isn’t going to be possible. If it’s not a good outcome, you’re better off knowing before you walk down the aisle. Then, you can move on to the next artist until you find the right makeup artist for you. Just like any other wedding vendor, your makeup artist isn’t always the first one you find. Take your time and find the person you trust.

As the weeks go by we’ll be coming back with more advice from Monique, so stay tuned!
